Product Details

This sculptural reading chair was the result of a partnership between two of the most iconic mid-century designers, Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames. The pair wanted to prove that a chair's comfort didn't need to rely on soft cushions. A cleverly moulded shell could do the job just as well. Their Organic Chair is one of the first chairs ever to offer ergonomic comfort. Designed to follow the curves of the body, the chair has a reclining back and rounded armrests to encourage relaxation. Fully upholstered in soft cashmere, the chair is ideal for any purpose from reading or watching TV to luxurious dining.

The story behind the Saarinen and Eames Organic Chair

Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, USA in the 1930s. Their common interests in exploring new techniques and materials drew them together and they partnered on a number of designs. These mainly involved bending plywood to create organically shaped chairs. The Organic Chair, which has a plywood shell, was one of their most renowned collaborations. It was introduced at the MoMA-sponsored 1940 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition, where it took first place.
